How Do You Organise Your Books?

How do you organise your bookshelf? I usually have my organised by colours, though nothing as spectacular as the photo below (I just don't have that many books!). Right now all my books are piled in the hallway as I'm painting the walls. I stack my books much more cluttered though so all the space in the shelf is used up.

This is an actual bookshop in Chicago!

This is a staircase, such a clever use of space.

Is there any special way your organise your books? A friend of mine has them all perfectly alphabetised. I'm not that organised!

  1. These are some great pictures! I "try" and organize mine by genre but then I run out of space and random piles start to form. So then I'm really never sure where most everything is.

  2. My books look more like the bookshop in Chicago. They're not quite that bad, but they're stacked all over the place.

  3. Well I think keeping things chaotic can be just as good as being a neat freak... it looks more interesting at least :)

  4. Hi Lisa, I love your blog! I don't really arrange mine any one way. I have a seperate shelf for my TBR pile, and a seperate shelf for my all time faves, but the others are kinda hodge-podge. I really wish I had the amount of books and patience to do that color one! It's pretty much awesome.

  6. So, I've got a drawer full of TBRs, oh, and a big pile on my dresser of the ones that won't fit :) Everything else is stacked horizontally on my shelves two deep, to try and fit everything in. The only organizing I do is to put books by the same publisher together if the spines are similar, cause I like how it looks to have them matchy :)

  7. LOL! Well better too many books than not enough :)

I've started stacking my books horizontally as well so I can have more room in my bookshelf.

  8. Thanks for stopping by my blog!

I enjoyed looking at these pictures - and I particularly LOVE the original use of stairs as a bookcase. Hmmmm.... I wonder if my husband could construct something like that?!

I actually enjoy organization - so I do have my books in some kind of order: books that I will be teaching (along with commentary on those books) are on one bookshelf; british literature has its own bookshelf; books that I have read but know I will re-read another shelf, etc.

  9. That stairs image is gorgeous and ingenious! wish I could do that.

My books are organized in my room but still all over the place. I have most of them on a bookshelf right near my door.
The books that I've read are at the top, the ones that I read and loved are in the top front where you can easily see them and the ones that I read and did not like or kinda liked are behind those somewhat hidden in the back. The books that I will read are below those. Books that I will get to even later are even lower or stored away in my closet until I get to them. Hope that makes sense. :D

  11. Oh I love the staircase! How clever! I organize mine Alphabetically by author but that never lasts for long.

  12. Everything would definitely be a lot easier to find if they were alphabetized!

  13. Hello! This was lovely to read :)

I'm juuuust a little OCD, haha, all of my books are arranged alphabetically by author, and then within that, if they're in a series, I put them in the order of that series.

  14. Hi Lisa, this is interesting! I especially like the staircase one. Maybe I could incorporate that for my house in the future (if I ever own a double/multiple storey house)... :)

Thanks for visiting me at my Photoblog!

  15. Lets see..I mainly organize my books by how much I like them. The middle shelves are the easiest to get to so those always have my favorite reads. The bottom equals least favorites. I tend to keep the autographed books on the top shelf. I don't want to touch them and get them dirty. But I don't have many autographed books, so I keep trinkets and knick-knacks up there. And I try to keep books together by the same author.
