These are quotes from The Rose And The Beast: Fairytales Retold by Francesca Lia Block. Block is one on my favourite authors, her lyrical writing style is beautiful; the way she spins her words is pure poetry. Her stories weave magic into harsh and gritty reality, with her angsty characters facing hardships while always being able to see the beauty in the ordinary.
I haven't read this book for a while but like all of Block's books I intend to revisit it many times into the future. The Rose And The Beast contains a retelling and modernising of nine classic fairytales in Block's distinctive style.
The title story from the book is Beauty and The Beast (told in a very different way) which is one of my favourites... what's your favourite fairtytale?

I've never heard of this one!! I love retold fairy tales though. My favorite one is probably Daughter of the Forest. Have you read that one?

If I were reading Francesca Lia Block I probably wouldn't start here, she has much better books like the Weetzie Bat series. But yes, she does do Beauty and the Beast :)
ReplyDeleteYES!! The Six Swans is one of my favorite fairy tales. Six brothers are put under a curse where they become swans and the sister has six years to knit shirts out of starwort for them to wear to break the curse?? And she can't talk the whole time? I'm telling you, that retelling is a really good one.
